« JE PEINS CE QUE JE RESSENS NON PAS CE QUE JE VOIS » (carnet 45, 1926) « JE PEUX VOIR, APERCEVOIR, SANS CARNETS, ET RESPIRER L'AIR D'UNE VILLE, SENTIR SON GROUILLEMENT, MAIS JE NE PUIS APPORTER DE PRÉCISIONS […]. », Visages du monde. Témoins d’une pratique irrégulière mais assidue, les 58 carnets d’Alain Grandbois conservés à Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec constituent une sorte d’atelier portatif qui permet au poète voyageur de travailler et d’engranger des matériaux, mais également de concevoir son œuvre selon une visée de plus en plus claire au fil du temps et au gré de ses déplacements dans les plus grandes villes du monde : Paris, Londres, Madrid, Istanbul, Singapour, Saïgon, etc. Les nombreuses traces laissées par le travail de rédaction des poèmes et la composition du recueil L’étoile pourpre mettent ainsi au jour quelques-unes des caractéristiques de l’invention poétique et révèlent que le recours aux carnets peut répondre à des impératifs pratiques ou esthétiques. Plusieurs documents et pièces d’archives complètent cette première incursion dans le corpus complet des carnets d’Alain Grandbois. L’établissement d’inventaires descriptifs et chronologiques permet ainsi de saisir à la fois la nature et la portée de chacun des carnets ; les fac-similés et transcriptions de quelques-uns des feuillets les plus intéressants illustrent la richesse et la diversité de ces instruments d’écriture qui donnent aussi à voir la fébrilité qui s’empare du poète quand il travaille dans ses carnets.
