Abstract
Parmi les rituels du mariage des Franco-Ontariens, la danse de l’aîné célibataire, garçon ou fille, demeure une sanction solidement enracinée, voire identitaire. Par l’examen minutieux des enquêtes de terrain commandées depuis 1999, l’auteur livre la première synthèse de cette tradition attestée dès 1826 au Québec. Les traces qu’il a mises à jour montrent que la pratique de ce rituel aurait été fort répandue en Amérique française, mais que son souvenir se serait érodé en France par où elle serait venue, et en Angleterre où elle vivait au temps de Shakespeare, comme aussi au Québec qui en aurait été le foyer de diffusion. Le paradoxe de la résistance des marges, figuré par le principe du limaçon, se dénoue avec un essai d’interprétation de la dynamique des traditions.
