Lorsque, rassemblant ses souvenirs, Félix-Antoine Savard écrit : « J’aurai vécu dès ma jeunesse dans le royaume des enchantements » (Journal et souvenirs, 2 : 67), c’est à ses expéditions et ses séjours en forêt qu’il songe. Depuis longtemps disparus, ceux qui l’ont initié à la vie des bois, son père et ses guides Mas et Gise, continuent de vivre dans sa mémoire ; il est toujours avec eux sous les arbres, parmi les rumeurs de l’eau et du vent. D’autres ont célébré nos splendides forêts ; personne ne l’a fait de façon aussi intense, aussi puissamment imagée et de tant de manières. Si Menaud, maître-draveur fait pénétrer le lecteur dans une forêt souffrante, tragique même, son auteur peut aussi, comme il le fait en 1950 devant les ingénieurs forestiers du Québec, prendre la défense d’un patrimoine vital qu’il sait vulnérable et menacé. Mais ce qui séduit le plus dans l’œuvre de Savard et en quoi il excelle, c’est lorsque son verbe inspiré accède au pur lyrisme. Alors, « pareil aux êtres traversés », comme il l’écrit au sujet de son vieux guide Mas, il s’identifie aux arbres (Le Bouscueil : 78) ; il mêle son propre souffle à celui de la forêt secouée par le vent (L’Abatis : 150). Enfin, transcendant ce qu’il observe et se plaît à longuement décrire, il rejoint le symbole. Et c’est ainsi que, évoluant sur le lac de la plus haute montagne, le huard, oiseau de beauté, figure le poète au mystérieux rituel.
