Le végétal semble omniprésent dans l’enluminure médiévale que l’on associe couramment aux rinceaux feuillus et aux feuilles d’acanthe multicolores. Cependant, cette impression n’est vraie qu’en partie. En effet, les motifs végétaux ne deviennent réellement abondants dans le décor des livres qu’à partir de la fin du haut Moyen-Âge (seconde moitié du 9e siècle).
