Abstract
Abstract Undertaking pilgrimage and visiting sacred traces associated with the Buddha’s life is an important ritual form that plays an integral role in assembling Buddhist worlds of practice through a moral geography. As spaces of living memory that embed and diffuse the spiritual biography of the Buddha, pilgrimage supports a paradigmatic model of aspiration for those who have made progress along the path to nirvana. This chapter explores some of the meanings of Buddhist pilgrimage with special attention to the sensory, performative, and affective dimensions of place. Drawing on theoretical insights in new materialism, it also examines the important ways materiality and meaning converge at the Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Bodh Gaya, showing how Buddhist rituals become entangled with heritage formations at national and global scales.
