Abstract
Unique patterns of cardiac remodelling occur in congenital cardiac shunts because of the redirected blood flow. For novice users of cardiac ultrasound, detecting a shunt can be challenging. This paper discusses structural cardiac shunts causing left-heart dilatation, followed by an overview of their associated pattern of cardiac remodelling. For each shunt, we outline 3 specific transthoracic echocardiography views that can help illustrate the distinct remodelling patterns. This guide provides practitioners with an approach to shunts in congenital imaging, even in instances in which the lesion is not visualized directly.
