Par les nombreuses études qu’il lui a consacrées, Leo Strauss a grandement contribué à la réhabilitation des écrits socratiques de Xénophon (Mémorables, Banquet, Apologie et Économique). Or, accordant plus d’importance à ce qu’un texte passerait délibérément sous silence qu’à ce qu’il affirme en toutes lettres, l’herméneutique straus­sienne est loin de faire l’unanimité parmi les interprètes de Xénophon. Après avoir exposé les principales raisons pour lesquelles l’intérêt de Strauss pour Xénophon ne s’est jamais démenti, cette étude se penche sur un cas particulier, celui des nombreuses exé­gèses que Strauss a proposées de Mémorables IV 4, où Socrate définit la justice en termes d’obéissance aux lois. L’analyse approfondie de ces exégèses met en lumière les écueils et les apories de l’herméneutique straussienne.
