Abstract
Abstract The Canadian Clavicle Trial compared nonoperative management to plate fixation in randomized patients with completely displaced midshaft clavicle fractures. The study included 132 adult patients with acute closed fractures. Follow-up was extended to twelve months. Shoulder function scores were superior in the operative group at all time points, and there was no difference in range of motion. The nonunion risk was greater following nonoperative management (14%) compared to fixation (3%). Metalwork irritation and prominence occurred in 18%, and 5% of patients underwent reoperation for infection. Patients with displaced midshaft clavicle fractures should be carefully counseled regarding each management option.
