“Vida normal”, programa de apoyo al adulto mayor o geriátrico ¿Cuál ayuda más a conservar el estado cognitivo en el adulto mayor?

Se observa que en los últimos años un creciente número de adultos mayores, con una mayor expectativa de vida, han normalizado como parte del proceso de deterioro propio de la edad cambios como la pérdida de memoria, lenguaje entre otros, pese a las dificultades que esto representa en su vida diaria y estos síntomas pueden derivar en trastornos neurológicos como, Alzheimer, entre otros. La presente investigación tiene como objetivo comparar el estado cognitivo de adultos mayores en tres ámbitos: aquellos que están institucionalizados, aquellos que acuden a programas de estimulación cognitiva y aquellos que viven por su propia cuenta. Este es un estudio cuantitativo no experimental con una muestra no probabilística donde se empleó el Montreal Cognitive Assessment en una población de 371 adultos mayores. Se encontró deterioro cognitivo en el 99% de pacientes institucionalizados en geriátrico, el 75% en quienes asisten a programas de estimulación cognitiva y el 83% de personas que no asisten a programas. No hay diferencia significativa en cuanto el nivel de estudios cursados, de igual manera con respecto al sexo de los participantes. Las áreas más afectadas son: dominio visoespacial, lenguaje y recuerdo diferido. Se puede concluir que el deterioro cognitivo no es un trastorno que se presente en un grupo especifico de personas, puede afectar a individuos tanto hombres como mujeres, independiente de su nivel académico. De igual forma, tanto aquellos que están institucionalizados, o en programas de estimulación presentan deterioro cognitivo, el porcentaje de pacientes que no tienen un desempeño normal es muy reducido en los tres ámbitos.
