Abstract
Iklim dan kondisi fisik sebuah wilayah menjadi penentu bagaimana kenyamanan dan keamanan sebuah bangunan. Kondisi alam, baik cuaca, tanah, udara, air dan makhluk hidup lainnya, menjadi sebuah pertimbangan dalam memilih dan menentukan tempat tinggal mereka. Arsitektur vernakular adalah desain arsitektur yang hadir berdasarkan respon masyarakat terhadap lingkungannya. Seperti halnya Kota Banjarmasin, sungai menjadi orientasi hidup bagi masyarakat Kota Banjarmasin. Lingkungan sungai memainkan peran penting dalam kehidupan sehari-hari masyarakat. Dari dasar tersebut didapatkan sebuah rumusan bagaimana respon atau penyesuaian rumah-rumah vernakular yang berada pada kawasan tepian sungai Kota Banjarmasin terhadap lingkungan sungainya. Dengan tujuan untuk mendapatkan sebuah karakteristik bangunan yang sesuai dengan lingkungan sungai Kota Banjarmasin. Metode penelitian menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif untuk mengamati rumah vernakular pada permukiman tepan sungai Kota Banjarmasin yang berada di sepanjang aliran sungai Martapura. Terdapat beberapa aspek yang menjadi elemen dasar dalam penelitian ini, yaitu aspek teknis, aspek budaya dan aspek lingkungan. Hasil dari penelitian ini mendapatkan bahwa rumah-rumah tepian sungai di Kota Banjarmasin merupakan produk dari adaptasi yang cepat terhadap kondisi fisik, budaya, dan lingkungan sekitarnya, menciptakan suatu keseimbangan yang harmonis antara tradisi dan perkembangan zaman.
