Abstract
This chapter explores the concept of “izzat” or honour among South Asian women in the Canadian diaspora. Pulling from two research projects, I examined how South Asian women in the Diaspora comprehend, resist, and reclaim this cultural notion in their daily lives. Drawing from literature and personal stories that emerged from these two projects, I demonstrate how izzat shapes second-generation South Asian women’s family narratives and community interactions, particularly considering the intergenerational trauma of the 1947 partition of India. The analysis underscores the potential for izzat to be employed as a tool of hetero-patriarchy and violence, tracing its influence through language, historical, and religious texts, and its manifestation during the 1947 partition. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the multifaceted role of izzat within a diasporic context and its implications for women’s experiences.
