Dissection Techniques used to Assess the Root Cause of a Hydro-Generator Stator Failure
Bibliographic record
Abstract
When a premature failure occurs on a stator winding during its expected normal life, root cause analysis needs to be performed to assess the condition of the entire winding and evaluate the probability that a second failure occurs on the same machine or on other machines of the same design. The evaluation includes operation condition analysis, diagnostic tests on bars removed from the machine and on spare bars, and dissection. This paper presents a case study of a 370 MVA, 13.8 kV hydro-generator stator winding failure after 29 years of service. The paper describes the dissection techniques used to assess the insulation system degradation and to perform the root cause analysis following the phase-to-ground fault that occurred on a bottom bar. Operating conditions were evaluated which included the number of starts and stops, the stator temperature and the operating power through the years. Also, diagnostic tests were performed on the bars removed from the machine and compared to diagnostic tests performed on the spare bars.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
