Exploring the process of identity building through taekwondo practice among Korean-Immigration youth in Canada

Abstract
본 연구는 캐나다에서 한인 청소년이 태권도 수련을 통해 정체성을 어떻게 형성해 나아가는지 밝힘으로써 이민 청소년의 성공적인 정체성 확립을 위한 전략을 제공하는 데 의미가 있다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위하여, 연구참여자 3명을 대상으로 2023년 8월 19일- 10월 28일까지 심층 면담을 통해 자료를 수집하였으며, 수집된 자료는 Corbin & Strauss(2008)의 근거이론 분석 중 개방 코딩과 과정 분석을 통해 자료를 분석하였다. 먼저 자료의 범주화를 위한 개방 코딩 결과, 17개의 개념이 도출되었으며, 도출된 개념을 바탕으로 참여자의 질문 경험을 과정 분석한 결과 8개의 하위범주와 4개의 범주로 범주화되었다. 이 결과를 바탕으로 과정 분석 결과, 첫 번째 단계는 ‘소속감이 없어 외로움’의 단계로 한인 청소년은 캐나다 친구들과 문화 등 학교생활에서 어렵고 불편하였으며 바쁜 가족과 불편한 학교 어디에도 마음을 나눌 수 없어 소속감을 느끼지 못해 외로워하였다. 두 번째 단계는 ‘한국 문화에 끌려 다가감’의 단계이다. 세 번째 단계는 ‘자신감이 높아지고 자신의 그룹이 생김’이다. 마지막 단계는 ‘공동체와 성장하며 삶을 준비함’의 단계이다. 이 단계에서 한인 청소년은 예의범절 및 인성교육을 통해 마음이 단련되며, 승급심사를 통해 삶의 질서와 규칙을 습득하면서 미래에 대한 준비와 계획을 할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 통하여 한인 청소년의 정체성 형성 과정은 ‘공동체와 더불어 자신감 있게 서기’로 도출되었다. 이러한 결과는 타국에서 청소년의 형성에 있어 태권도는 수련하는 집단 속에서 자기 중심 세력으로 자신 있게 설수 있게 하고, 스스로 자신 있게 공동체 안에서 살아내는 모습으로 나아감을 알 수 있었다.
