Commande de l'évaluation Dans le cadre d'une étude portant sur les puits de carbone forestier, actuel et à venir, il a été demandé à INRAE de produire une évaluation quantitative du rôle des sols forestiers français en tant que puits de carbone.En effet, s'il est bien établi que les sols contiennent un peu plus de la moitié du carbone forestier (Pellerin and Bamière, 2020), la dynamique temporelle du stock de carbone organique des sols (COS) est encore assez mal connue.L'objectif de la présente évaluation est de faire l'état des connaissances sur le niveau du puits de COS à l'échelle nationale, mais hors forêts d'outre-mer. MéthodeCompte tenu du temps imparti pour cette évaluation ( 5 semaines), il ne s'agissait pas de procéder à de nouvelles approches de modélisation ou de méta-analyse, mais de faire l'état des connaissances au travers d'une analyse de la littérature.La base bibliographique initiale (n=10 publications) a été celle de l'étude 4-pour-1000 (Pellerin and Bamière, 2020), dans sa version de travail dite « longue » et non publiée (rédacteurs : L. Augusto, Laurent Saint-André, et Lauric Cécillon [INRAE]).Cette base a été complétée par une requête sur le Web of Science (accession : 07/02/2024), dont la syntaxe a été fixée après plusieurs itérations visant à optimiser le compromis entre sélectivité et exhaustivité des réponses : ts=((soc OR "soil organic carbon") AND (forest*) AND (change OR trend OR budget) AND (country OR (large AND scale)) AND (year OR (long AND term)))Cette requête a fourni 225 références dont la pertinence a été évaluée sur la base des titres et des résumés, ce qui a conduit à la collecte pour lecture approfondie de 12 publications supplémentaires.En parallèle, les co-auteurs d'un article de synthèse sur le COS forestier (Mayer et al., 2020) ont tous été sollicités afin qu'ils fournissent des publications en lien avec le sujet.Les 6 collègues qui ont répondu (Klaus Katzensteiner & Mathias Mayer 1 , Jérôme Laganière & David Paré 2 , Elena Vanguelova 3 , et Lars Vesterdal 4 ) ont fourni 13 publications qui ont été ajoutées aux 22 déjà rassemblées, soit un total de 35.Il est important de souligner que les recherches bibliographiques ne se sont pas cantonnées au seul cas français mais ont au contraire cherché à rassembler toutes les informations portant sur des quantifications de puits de COS à large échelle.Ces publications ont été toutes lues, les données pertinentes collectées, et le présent rapport rédigé en le complétant par des références déjà connues du groupe d'experts.
