Abstract
Le roman français de la seconde moitié du xxe siècle travaille volontiers la ruine comme un processus actif qui use ses paysages, ses personnages, leurs destins, et jusqu’à sa forme. Le récit s’en trouve placé sur une pente funeste et inéluctable qui ne se dévoile que trop tard. Les Fruits du Congo (1951) d’Alexandre Vialatte en offre la démonstration crue, avec ses décors de conte lentement corrompus par la peur et les horreurs de l’Histoire. Le roman attache ce processus au motif du labyrinthe : celui-ci se manifeste dans ses espaces, dans la mythologie secrète de ses jeunes personnages ainsi que dans les progrès torturés et divagants de sa narration. Au cœur de ce labyrinthe rôde un monstre qui, d’abord allégorique, se révélera dangereusement concret. Dans le Labyrinthe (1959) d’Alain Robbe-Grillet répercute ces silences et ces détours dans les décors d’un roman d’espionnage où la stabilité des objets et d’une ville est troublée par une menace floutée. Finalement, afin de démontrer qu’une telle forme labyrinthique peut servir de cadre de lecture à d’autres corpus, nous en suggérons brièvement les contours dans trois romans québécois majeurs.
