Abstract
La notion de vérité en est une d’importance majeure pour la première lettre à Timothée, comme pour l’ensemble des pastorales qui, sur ce point, se rejoignent (sauf les deux extrémités de 2 Tm). À la lumière des autres usages du terme alètheia, il apparaît qu’en 1 Tm 2,4 la « connaissance de la vérité » s’identifie à celle de la révélation faite par Dieu en Jésus Christ. La volonté de salut universel de Dieu (1 Tm 2,3-5) coïncide dès lors avec celle que tous les humains accueillent la révélation et parviennent ainsi à la foi au Christ, médiateur unique. Deux chapitres plus loin, 1 Tm 4,10, tout en présentant la foi au Christ comme voie d’accès privilégiée au salut de Dieu, laisse cependant entendre que cette voie n’est pas exclusive. Alors qu’elle se montre très attentive à 1Tm 2,4, la théologie actuelle du pluralisme religieux gagnerait sans doute à scruter également le témoignage complémentaire de 1 Tm 4,10.
