Abstract

This chapter briefly describes why metals are fundamental building blocks of modern society, outlines the process from mining through refining to final production (primary processes) and then describes some of the typical applications. Without going into detail, since this is not the primary objective of this book, the discussion on primary processing covers such topics as the possible approaches to improving efficiency, reducing, or eliminating pollution and developing applications for waste products. The typical applications for metals mentioned include automobiles, batteries for electric vehicles, residential and industrial buildings, roads, computers, phones, etc. The decision process for selection should be based on recyclability, minimal waste, possible pollution, life cycle costs, and overall environmental impact. As with other chapters, the purpose of the metal's discussion is to provide a basis for developing the DSP process.
