Sport-related concussions significantly affect Canadian athletes, with 85% of varsity football players sustaining more than one concussion throughout their career. When a concussion is suspected, the athlete is removed from play, assessed using a concussion assessment tool, and prescribed a stepwise return-to-play protocol. At the International Conference on Concussion in Sport, hosted in 2001, 2004, 2008, and 2016, the Concussion in Sport Group revised and updated concussion assessment tools from the SCAT to the SCAT-5 and evolved return-to-play guideline theory from complete rest to light aerobic exercise. Future advancements aim to track athletes' blood biomarkers to determine if they have completely recovered from the post-concussive neurometabolic cascade and can safely recommence sport.
