Abstract
Sir, – I am grateful to Mr. Chesterton for the admission that my last letter has made the grounds and reasons of the growing antagonism to the new Education Bill a little more clear. It is the chief thing I seek to do. From the moment I heard Mr. Balfour introduce the measure to the House of Commons I felt and said that if the people of England once understood the character and contents and inevitable issues of this revolutionary programme they would never suffer their Parliament to carry it out. The light is spreading. The Government is being found out. Though Lord Halifax is silent just now, Cardinal Vaughan 2 has come to the aid of the Bishop of Southwark. 3 The Liberal Unionists of Birmingham and of the country are rising in revolt. Conservative laymen are speaking their minds, and the actualities of the situation are being made manifest.
