From conception to articulation, a teaching philosophy is a statement of the beliefs, values, goals, theories, and principles that guide one's teaching—not a statement of platitudes and wishful thinking. As such, a teaching philosophy serves as the starting point for engaging in critical reflection and continued professional development. How best to prepare such cogent statements that are brief but full of nuance is a task not easily realized, not least because it is a living document that evolves and grows with each lived experience encountered in the real or imagined arena of teaching and learning, with time and change being the only two constants. These considerations and others surrounding the careful crafting of a teaching philosophy statement comprise the primary focus of this entry. Critical observations exemplifying reflective practice follow some key introductory remarks. Throughout, it is suggested that it is the symbiotic combination of philosophy and reflective practice that are most likely to facilitate the continued growth, development, and improvement of language professionals. Where needed, specific examples are offered to underscore the weight of these observations and the implications that follow. The entry provides six notable recommendations for articulating and using a teaching philosophy.
