Abstract
Jacob-Isaac Segal, un des premiers écrivains en langue yiddish au Canada, est l’auteur d’une œuvre littéraire à la fois riche et moderne. Né en Ukraine en 1896 et immigré à Montréal en 1910, Segal a fortement contribué à l’essor d’une littérature yiddish dans la métropole québécoise. Auteur de douze recueils de poésie ainsi que de plusieurs essais et chroniques, il s’est taillé une place de renom dans le monde juif d’Europe de l’Est et de New York. Son écriture, empreinte de lyrisme et de mysticisme, a ouvert la voie à un important courant littéraire dans la diaspora juive en Amérique du Nord. Dans cet essai, l’anthropologue Pierre Anctil retrace le parcours littéraire du poète Jacob-Isaac Segal et son milieu. Tout en faisant découvrir au lecteur l’œuvre du poète grâce à des traductions inédites du yiddish vers le français, il montre que l’écriture de Segal reflète, à plusieurs égards, le cheminement des Juifs arrivés en Amérique du Nord depuis la Russie, l’Ukraine et la Pologne au début du XXe siècle.
