L’utilisation de symboles dans les mouvements sociaux autochtones de Montréal : une « traduction interculturelle » ?

Abstract
Les Peuples autochtones emploient une variété de symboles dans leurs luttes politiques et sociales dans la ville de Montréal. Ces symboles relèvent d’une certaine hybridité entre les impositions culturelles de la société dominante de descendance euro-canadienne et les traditions des nombreuses cultures autochtones du Canada. Les mêmes objets, vêtements et mises en scène sont employés par des activistes autochtones de Nations diverses révélant des référentiels identitaires communs souvent empreints d’une certaine homogénéisation. Pour autant, les Autochtones réinvestissent consciemment ces symboles participant à faire évoluer cette iconographie protestataire de façon constante. Cet article propose d’analyser l’utilisation de ces symboles dans l’activisme autochtone contemporain comme une forme de communication interculturelle, à la fois entre les Autochtones issus de Nations distinctes, mais également entre les Autochtones et le reste de la société. De plus, il illustre le potentiel de ces symboles dans l’évolution des représentations existantes envers les Autochtones.
