Abstract
Si Benjamin Rabier (1864–1939) demeure aujourd’hui associé à La vache qui rit et, plus largement, à toute une iconographie animalière, l’ensemble de sa production est loin de se limiter à un seul support et révèle un univers complexe que nous qualifions a posteriori d’intermédiatique. Ce texte suit la construction progressive de cet univers à l’aune de la fable. Nous montrons ainsi que si ce genre a été exploité par Rabier, sous forme illustrée essentiellement, celui-ci a aussi su s’en détacher pour profiter de toutes les occasions offertes par les mutations sociales, artistiques, techniques, politiques et économiques de son époque, participant de fait aux prémices d’un nouveau système médiatique.
