Neste artigo, analisaremos a proposta desenvolvida por Hans Jonas de uma Teologia filosófica, cujo tema é o conceito de Deus. O intuito é analisar a tentativa de Jonas de ultrapassar a linguagem objetificante própria da ciência e de boa parte da filosofia moderna, sem recair, contudo, em uma abordagem estritamente teológica: eis o que se efetiva como tarefa de uma “teologia filosófica”, cujos antecedentes podem ser encontrados em Platão e Aristóteles. A importância de compreender essa estratégia por um lado tenta resolver a polêmica em torno da presença de Deus na obra de Jonas e, por outro, explica porque ele se utiliza – cuidadosamente – das palavras “teoria” e “conceito” em seus dois textos sobre Deus. O presente trabalho será desenvolvido particularmente a partir de textos inéditos disponíveis nos Hans Jonas Philosophisches Archiv, da Universidade de Konstanz. Entre esses textos, daremos destaque às anotações em torno da Teoria de Deus: um curso ministrado pela primeira vez em Ottawa, no semestre de inverno de 1952-1953 e depois replicado em New York. A análise dos pontos centrais desse texto demonstra que a questão de Deus é estratégica para o filósofo, seja porque recupera uma pergunta central da filosofia, seja porque se conecta com o esforço de romper com o materialismo vigente na tradição.
