Abstract
Islam adalah agama yang sangat menjunjung tinggi keadilan tanpa membedakan pria maupun wanita. Akan tetapi sejalan dengan perkembangan zaman, keterbatasan dan perbedaan pemahaman dalam memahami agama menjadi momok yang mengagungkan gender tertentu dan merendahkan lainnya. Ketimpangan peran sosial berdasarkan gender masih tetap dipertahankan dengan dalih doktrin agama. Agama dilibatkan untuk melestarikan kondisi di mana kaum perempuan tidak menganggap dirinya sejajar dengan laki-laki. Tidak mustahil di balik kesadaran teologis ini terjadi manipulasi antropologis bertujuan untuk memapankan struktur patriarki, yang secara umum merugikan kaum perempuan dan hanya menguntungkan kelas-kelas tertentu dalam masyarakat. Melihat pergeseran paradigma ini, Amina Wadud berusaha untuk mendongkrak pemahaman yang telah menyimpang jauh dari penghargaan Al-Qur’an terhadap wanita.
