Abstract

Il contributo si sofferma sulla produzione educativa della lombarda Anna Vertua Gentile (1845-1926), nota soprattutto per la letteratura di condotta femminile, analizzando, nello specifico, un capitolo del libro In collegio. Letture per giovinette (1889 [1890]), che offre una microstoria della lingua italiana diretta alle ragazze. Attraverso la finzione narrativa, che simula una lezione in aula, Vertua Gentile propone alle giovani discenti idee e nozioni sulla lingua del nuovo Stato, sul suo rapporto con i dialetti, sulle differenze tra lingua letteraria e lingua d’uso, sull’importanza della scrittura (anche per una donna), contemperando le diverse posizioni che si erano andate sviluppando all’indomani della dirompente proposta manzoniana e dell’animato dibattito linguistico-pedagogico che ne seguì. Il testo pertanto si rivela prezioso non solo per ricostruire la teoria linguistica sottesa alla prassi educativa dell’autrice, ma anche per mettere a fuoco la circolazione e la ricezione delle idee linguistiche diffuse a livello accademico negli ambienti della scuola e presso un pubblico di non specialisti.
