Abstract
Blastomycosis is an endemic mycosis caused by Blastomyces spp. that may trigger substantial illness within the body. Different regions of the United States and Canada, much of Africa, and, to a lesser degree, India and the Middle East, have developed infection. Our actual understanding of the geographic spread of blastomycosis is hampered by a lack of reporting. Blastomycosis has a wide range of clinical symptoms, from asymptomatic infection to respiratory failure and death. Extrapulmonary dissemination can spread to the connective tissue, bones, the brain, and spinal cord. While cultural and non-cultural detection methods exist, accurate identification requires a high level of clinical probability. The Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Thoracic Society both advocate using antifungal medications, with the choice determined by sickness severity, location of infection, suppression of immunity, and pregnancy.
