Abstract
Lives of Girls and Women is the story of a girl called Del Jordan living in Jubilee, Ontario who grows up to become a writer. This chapter discusses Del's childish discovery of how different her own world can look when viewed from somebody else's perspective, almost as if there are alternative worlds which challenge each other as different representations of reality. Though Munro is not a fantasy writer her stories expose the limits of realism by working within a referential framework and then collapsing it by shifting into a different fictional mode. The stories through which Del maps her life are related to the traditional subjects of women's writing and of Canadian small-town fiction. The chapter also focuses on Del's youthful discourse of desire and sexual discovery.
