Abstract
The authors in this volume have examined some of the major industrial relations issues in health care in Canada, the USA and the UK. In their examinations the authors have employed John Dunlop’s concept of an ‘industrial relations system’, as an heuristic device to identify and analyse the key elements within the ‘system’ and the principal interactions between them. Moreover the use of Dunlop’s concept has enabled a range of comparisons and contrasts to be drawn between the three countries. The following areas have been discussed: the health sector labour market in the three countries; the structure of the labour movements ; the general legal frameworks and their specific application to the health sectors; the experience of collective bargaining; the different modes of conflict resolution; the effects of income policy on industrial relations in the health sectors.
