Abstract
Cet ouvrage présente la vie peu ordinaire d’un homme né à Varsovie en 1925, mort à Sainte-Foy en 1989, qui avait choisi, avec sa famille, de vivre au Québec, au tournant de la Révolution tranquille. On y relate le parcours d’un jeune rescapé des camps de concentration, jeté sur les chemins de l’immigration. On revient aussi sur un aspect méconnu de la construction de l’État québécois moderne et sur l’émergence de nouvelles pratiques rigoureuses dans la recherche économique. Enfin, on y montre que derrière l’intransigeance du savant se cachait la sensibilité d’un « homme qui suscitait des vocations ». Le citoyen non-spécialiste, mais informé, se méfie depuis longtemps et avec raison des prétentions de la science économique qui essaie, disait Tadek Matuszewski, « de réduire une réalité complexe à un petit nombre de relations analytiques compliquées, à la signification obscure et à la validité suspecte ». Il voulait injecter une dose d’humilité à une science « qui en a grandement besoin ». Dans le cadre de travaux reconnus par le prix Nobel de sciences économiques Wassily Leontief, le professeur Matuszewski consacra sa carrière à la conception de modèles intersectoriels de planification économique qui furent et sont encore une des belles réussites de la science économique.
