Este estudio parte de la premisa que Don Juan Tenorio de José Zorrilla es una obra teatral que, por medio del retrato del protagonista y de su redentora, analiza los motivos que hacen de la sexualidad y de la guerra modos de dominio y al mismo tiempo de redención. Este artículo estudiará cómo la extravagancia de don Juan y la alegoría de su desenfreno por medio del carnaval llegan a tener connotaciones de rito sagrado y de fantasía mística que se complementan con la función transformadora/redentora que se asigna a doña Inés. Conjuntamente, se estudia cómo el motivo del amor verdadero es presentado como una fuerza del universo y esperanza de eternidad.
