Editorial introductions

Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care was launched in 1998. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The fields of clinical nutrition and metabolic care are divided into 15 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS Dwight E MatthewsProfessor Matthews received his PhD degree in Chemistry from Indiana University, USA, with a focus in mass spectrometry. He began his career at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, USA, in the Department of Medicine. At Washington University, he developed stable isotope tracer methods to study in vivo amino acid metabolism in humans. Several of these methods are commonly used by numerous investigators today. These studies were performed in collaboration with Dennis M. Bier, MD, at Washington University and Vernon R. Young, PhD, at MIT, USA. After almost a decade at Washington University, he moved to Cornell University Medical College in New York City, USA, as a tenured Associate Professor of Biochemistry in Medicine and Surgery to continue studies of metabolism. Here, his focus broadened to include studies of metabolism in conditions found commonly in surgical metabolism with Steven Lowry, MD, at Cornell and energy metabolism using doubly labelled water with Steven Heymsfield, MD, at Columbia University, USA. He also directed the Core Laboratories of the General Clinical Research Center. After a decade at Cornell, Prof. Matthews moved to the University of Vermont, USA, in 1996 as a Professor of Medicine in the College of Medicine and as a Professor of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences. He has directed core laboratories at the University of Vermont related to mass spectrometry for the Clinical Research Center, the Vermont Genetics Network Proteomics Core Laboratory, and currently the Mass Spectrometry Core Laboratory in Immunobiology. From 2002–2014, Prof. Matthews was Chair of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Vermont and named the Pomeroy Professor of Chemistry. In 2019, he became a Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and Medicine at the University of Vermont, but continues his research activities. Professor Matthews is a world-renown expert in the development of stable isotope tracer techniques to study metabolism in humans. He has published over 170 papers in a range of peer-reviewed journals and over 50 contributions to symposia and book chapters. Jann ArendsDr Jann Arends received his medical license in 1980 and underwent specialty training in Göttingen and Freiburg, Germany. He was board certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hematology & Medical Oncology. He also received board certification in Palliative Medicine and in Clinical Nutrition and received three years of specialty training in Diabetology. Dr Arends received his Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. Werner Creutzfeldt in Göttingen, investigating endocrine interactions within pancreatic islets of Langerhans. From 1986 to 1989, Dr Arends was a visiting fellow at the Metabolism Division at Washington University Medical School, St. Louis, Mo, USA, gaining expertise in stable isotope methodologies enabled in-vivo tracer studies performed in collaboration with Prof. Dennis M Bier and Prof. Peter Schauder in St. Louis and Göttingen. These studies allowed investigating synthetic rates of whole body protein and individual circulating proteins in healthy subjects and patients with liver failure. He also contributed to exploring methodological problems occurring in the use of different amino acid tracers. In 1993, Dr Arends moved to Freiburg, Germany, to head the Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition section at the newly founded Tumor Biology Center at Freiburg University. During this time, the section accumulated and distributed expertise in treating and caring for patients requiring home parenteral nutrition. In 2015, after the Center merged with Freiburg University Medical Center, he took the position of consultant in palliative care in medical oncology. His clinical research activities have focused on diagnosing and treating malnutrition and cachexia in patients with cancer. Dr Arends chairs the clinical nutrition section of the German Society of Hematology and Oncology and the Homecare section of the German society of Clinical Nutrition. For several years, he has been involved in training courses on nutrition in cancer patients offered by professional societies, including ESPEN, ESMO and ASCO. Since 2003 and 2006, he is the leading author of the German (DGEM) and European (ESPEN) expert groups developing guidelines for nutritional support of patients with cancer. His CV includes more than 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals. M Isabel TD CorreiaDr Correia was born in Lobito, Angola before moving to Brazil where she attended the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte. She completed her training in surgery at Hospital Semper, Belo Horizonte and was awarded her PhD in Gastrointestinal Surgery at University of São Paulo, Brazil. She was full professor of Surgery at UFMG where she is retired from, and is currently invited Professor of the Surgical Department at UFMG. Dr Correia currently coordinates the Clinical Nutrition Team ETERNA at Rede Mater Dei and Hospital SEMPER, Brazil. She has been working in the field of nutrition since her residency, dedicating a large part of her time to clinical practice but she has also pursued some basic research in nutritional sciences. Most of her research has been dedicated to malnutrition, cancer, surgery and quality performance, as well as some amino acids and probiotics. Lately, she has dedicated most of her time to cancer patients with focus on nutrition, quality of life as well as with quality improvement and safety. She has edited three books, one on nutrition and sports, the other on the clinical approach of surgical patients and the last one on the metabolic and nutrition care of the surgical patient. She has published several papers in many different journals and has lectured all over the world where she has made many friends. Dr Correia has also been the deputy editor in chief for Nutrition: The Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences and participates as member of the editorial board for several other journals. She has been an active member of the Brazilian Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and is past President of the Latin American Federation of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (FELANPE). She is also an active member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons, responsible for the nutrition and metabolic surgical education program as well as the committee for quality improvement and safety in surgery. When Dr Correia is not teaching or working at the hospital, she can be found in the gym working out, dancing, doing yoga or swimming, as sport is one of her main hobbies. Over the weekends, the best place to find her is in the kitchen as cooking is a favourite activity (she has a Diplôme Universitaire du GoÛt, de la Gastronomie et des Arts de la Table, an official diploma delivered by the Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne and the Cordon Bleu, Paris, France). Reading all different types of literature (from novels to quality improvement or world novelties) is also a well enjoyed hobby. André Van GossumProf. André Van Gossum was appointed as Medical Physician in 1978 and as Gastroenterologist in 1983. In 1985 Prof. Van Gossum completed a one-year fellowship in Canada under the supervision of Prof. Khursheed Jeejeebhoy in Toronto General Hospital. In 1991, he presented a thesis entitled Evaluation of lipid peroxidation by measurement of breath pentane in humans. Since 2000, Prof. Van Gossum has been serving as the Chief of the Clinic of Intestinal Diseases and Nutritional Support in the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatopancreatology and Digestive Oncology at Erasme University Hospital, Free University of Brussels, Belgium. He is a lecturer of post graduate courses in Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition in the Faculty of Medicine. Additionally, he runs a program on home enteral and parenteral nutrition and is the Coordinator of the Nutrition Support Team. In 1988, Prof. Van Gossum founded the Belgian Society for Clinical Nutrition and has been an active member of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) since 2005. He was appointed as the President of the ESPEN congress, held in Brussels, Belgium, in 2005, served as the Treasurer of ESPEN from 2008 to 2012 and was elected as the Chair since 2014 to 2018. He was appointed as an ESPEN Honorary member in 2019. Prof. Van Gossum is also a member of the ESPEN-HAN and CIF group and the GLIM international working group. He is currently a Consultant in the Department of Gastroenterology/Nutrition at Erasme Hospital and Institut Bordet (University of Brussels), Belgium. He is an active member of the Belgian Alliance for optimal Nutrition Care for all. His CV includes 257 publications in peer-review journals.
