Science‐in‐brief: The 6th Havemeyer Workshop on <i>Rhodococcus equi</i>—A decade‐long journey in advancing research into a major equine pathogen (2012–2023)

Abstract
by the Havemeyer Foundation, as the sixth in a series held over the last 37 years, the conference was attended by 39 scientists and trainees from 11 countries representing many fields of science, industry and clinical practice.The goal of the conference was to share progress in the area of R. equi research and to forge new and lasting collaborations within the scientific community.The Havemeyer Workshops have played a pivotal role in fostering collaboration and trust within the equine veterinary scientific community.The inaugural R. equi Havemeyer Workshop in Guelph in 1986 marked the milestone in bringing together early pioneers working on what was then known as Corynebacterium equi.The second workshop in 1996, hosted in Guelph, aimed to introduce burgeoning scientists to the field.Among these scientists was the late Dr. Steeve Gigure.During this workshop, discussions encompassed topics ranging from the role of the virulence plasmid to factors driving inappropriate immune responses in foals, optimal diagnostic techniques and treatment strategies.Following the sequence of two virulence plasmids, a "mini-Workshop" in 2001 laid the groundwork for the R. equi Genome Consortium.The 3rd Workshop in Pullman, Washington (2002), the 4th Workshop in Edinburgh (2008) 1 and the 5th Workshop in Deauville, France (2012), 2 were all graced with Steeve Gigure's involvement.The tragic passing of Steeve in 2018 interrupted his efforts to organise the 6th Workshop in Georgia, USA, which was subsequently delayed further due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.Importantly, the Havemeyer Workshops have been instrumental in advancing the field of R. equi research, embodying international collaboration, creativity, focused research, the forging of enduring friendships, and the pursuit of scientific excellence, mutual respect and trust-qualities that defined Steeve Gigure.surfaces, to shed light on virulence mechanisms.Additionally, VapA distribution on farms was discussed, with a focus on low-level contamination of non-horse environments by vapA-containing R. equi 5 and limitations to the use of R. equi choE gene in PCR identification.
