Abstract
Located at the periphery of American life in the early republic and antebellum eras—aside from an initial settlement of pioneers in Oregon’s Willamette River Valley—the Pacific Northwest is a vast region of beach-lined shores, coastal mountains, river valleys, deep canyons, the towering Cascade mountain range, and an arid interior plateau. Definitions of the area that constitutes the Pacific Northwest vary from the broad (all territory from the Rocky Mountains in the east to the Pacific Ocean on the west, and from the southern reaches of Alaska in the north to Northern California in the South) to the narrow (the states of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington). Dominating the region is the Columbia River, which originates in the Canadian Rockies and flows roughly 1,200 miles (1,900 kilometers) to its outlet in the Pacific Ocean on the border of presentday Oregon and Washington.
