Abstract
Philip Michael Ondaatje&s;s turning eighty in 2023 presents an appropriate historical moment to publish a new and innovative study of the fictional works of the Sri Lankan-Canadian literary phenomenon, an exponent of the genres of poetry and novels, who was born on September 12, 1943 in Colombo. In some ways an accidental writer who never thought he would put pen to paper in his childhood and adolescence in Ceylon and England, his winning multiple literary awards seems preordained. His novel, The English Patient , won the Booker Prize in 1992 and the Golden Booker in 2018, and many others en passant , establishing him as one of the greatest living writers of our times.
