Abstract
Long-term care homes in Canada have been historically institutional in nature, focusing on physical health and overlooking the psychological well-being of residents. Being isolated in settings that are oftentimes devoid of proper sensory and social stimulation can be difficult, especially for dementia residents. As cognition and the understanding of reality declines, people with dementia become reliant on their senses to connect with others and make sense of the world around them. How can the long-term care environment be designed to respond to the needs of dementia residents with compassion and dignity? This thesis explores the integration of dementia residents in long-term care within a mixed housing community in a bid to improve their quality of life through social, sensory and dementia-friendly design interventions.
