Space Architecture represents a new frontier for architectural thought, theory, and practice. As increasing emphasis is placed on the space exploration, the discipline of architecture must expand to include the design of humane and sustainable habitation in realms where gravity, logistics, and environmental factors operate differently. In addition to their use for telecommunications and military purposes, spacecraft and microgravity environments have a vital role to play in medical research and in the study of climate change. This thesis aspires to be a primer for students of architecture in the design of orbital environments, covering a range of topics beginning with a brief history of space exploration. Embracing design as a form of research, the thesis includes the design of cancer and climate research lab modules within a space station concept in low-Earth-orbit (LEO) as a case study to better understand the range of challenges that architects face in this milieu.
