(A)Temporal Architecture: Urban Meditation Spaces for the Church of Montreal

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic intermittently disrupted all religious gatherings in Quebec. Christians were unable to gather as the Church, which further emphasized the importance of individual daily prayer, Bible study, and worship. Two questions emerged thereafter: What does biblical meditation look like in the 21st century, and if being homebound in closer quarters than usual inhibits this practice, where can Christians go to meditate on scripture? For Christians, meditation consists of actively thinking through studying the Bible, praying over it, and asking God to understand it by His Spirit. As such, it aspires to dampen the busyness of life and focus on eternity. Set across the island of Montreal, the project explores the scales of the city, Christian, and Bible, speculating architectural interventions suitable for biblical meditation through mapping, biblical interpretations, and architectural analyses.
