Abstract
The great absence of work about Sudanese cinema is palpable to me as a Sudanese student.The lingering devastation of colonialism leaves regions like Northern and South Sudan struggling to recover.On one hand, there is a history of neglect surrounding Northern Sudan's domestic film archive.On the other hand, exploring Western scholarship for discussions of Sudanese cinema is often a futile exercise, as incomplete colonial film analysis dominates.Eager to illustrate the unillustrated in the Anglophone context, this project analyses the archiving of Sudanese film history across time and space focusing on its presence in the colonial archive, the national archive, and international Pan-African archives.It critically examines issues of archival power, absence, presence, and the inadequate preservation of heritage.With no end in sight for the current war in Sudan and the destruction it brings, there may still be hope for the future of Sudanese film archiving.
