Abstract
What role can architecture play in preserving memories and stories of trauma, loss, and grief? This project seeks to explore the potentials of architecture through phenomenological and material studies to portray the critical Jewish histories of the Holocaust by designing a reinterpreted “archive” space in the City of Toronto. This work is born out of my connection to the Holocaust, studying the oral and written testimony of my grandparents during the Second World War. How can architecture house these memories, especially as we approach an era where Holocaust survivors will soon no longer be alive to tell their stories? This thesis uses production and material exploration methods to tell stories of life before, during, and after the war. The final design work brings together components of archival spaces to build a new form of architecture to grieve, mourn and deposit memory while bringing the community together.
