Abstract

The rendering as a form of representation is used to represent unbuilt architecture. It depicts material and environmental aspects of the project which are only abstractly represented through architectural drawings. To fulfill these functions, rendering uses a variety of techniques and processes to create images which resemble reality. This thesis investigates the rendering and its relationship to the reality which it represents, and how they inform one another. It examines the processes and conventions and how they shape these realities. This thesis argues that understanding the processes of rendering and critiquing the realities they create offers a more critical approach to architectural representation. Through the creation of new realities, rendering defines how the city is imagined, and architects are responsible for shaping these imaginings.
