Abstract
Notre étude porte sur l’accord verbal de nombre avec le sujet lorsque celui-ci réfère à des groupes humains désignés par des noms morphologiquement singuliers mais sémantiquement pluriels (i.e., noms collectifs). Elle examine la variation entre l’accord au singulier, conforme à l’usage standard, ou au pluriel, typique de l’usage vernaculaire. Notre recherche s’appuie sur des données d’entrevues recueillies au sein de la minorité francophone de Welland (Ontario), d’abord en 1975 et quarante ans plus tard. Nous mesurons la variation dans le temps ainsi que l’impact de facteurs linguistiques et extralinguistiques tels que : i) le type de nom collectif (le monde, du monde, tout le monde, famille, parenté, nom d’entreprise ou compagnie); ii) l’absence/présence de quantificateur devant le collectif; iii) l’appartenance socioéconomique, le sexe et le niveau de bilinguisme des locuteurs. Notre étude comble une lacune car, excepté la recherche de Tristram (2017), les travaux sur l’accord verbal de nombre avec les sujets collectifs n’ont pas examiné cet aspect du français selon une perspective sociolinguistique variationniste.
