Aborder la question de la vulnérabilité du soignant dans la relation de soin peut paraître déplacé voire illusoire. En effet, la figure commune du soignant est celle d’une personne forte, qui n’est pas affectée par la maladie et la souffrance du malade; une personne qui ne laisse pas transparaître le malaise et le mal-être liés à son activité. La pandémie de la Covid-19, qui a marqué notre monde ces dernières années, nous a révélé à suffisance que le soignant n’est pas un dieu vêtu en blouse blanche/bleue/rose/violette. L’expérience du quotidien nous montre que le soignant, tout comme le malade, peut être en situation de vulnérabilité. Quand le soignant est abandonné à sa souffrance et que sa vulnérabilité est ignorée, l’impact d’une telle expérience peut être néfaste pour les soins prodigués. Il s’agit dans cet article de considérer la notion de capabilité comme paradigme de compréhension de la prise en charge de la vulnérabilité du soignant. Suivant cette logique, répondre à la vulnérabilité du soignant revient à promouvoir un environnement de soin capacitant qui puisse lui permettre de développer ses capabilités. L’approche par les capabilités nous rappelle ainsi la nécessité de prendre en compte les aspirations morales et humaines des soignants dans la pratique médicale.
