Development of a Non-invasive Antenna Array for Non-Thermal Electroporation in Therapeutic Modality of Skin Tissue Tumors

Abstract
In the field of biomedical antenna applications, a prospective design principle of Near Field Focused (NFF) Microstrip patch array (MSPA) can be used for therapeutical applications in non-thermal Irreversible Electroporation (IRE) of skin tumors. This can be attained by focusing and collimating radiation (increasing the field intensity) in order to maximize the power deposition at a target tumour located in the Fresnel region (i.e., the radiative near-field) of the MSPA aperture when it is placed in close proximity of tumorous tissue sample. The two-fold underlying principle includes: (i) a specific phase taper on the MSPA elements that can collimate the array beam at the maximum intensity plane parallel to the aperture at a transverse near field distance, (ii) suitable amplitude-taper so as to reduce the sidelobe levels in the near-field avoiding the risk of unwanted radiation exposure of healthy tissues adjacent to target tumor location.
