Abstract
Abstract This chapter discusses the current Japanese approach to addressing issues related to equal pay for equal work between men and women, and the country’s legal framework for eliminating the gender pay gap. Japan’s unique cultural ethos plays a prominent role in any discussion about workplace gender inequities. This chapter will describe this ethos and other major factors that contribute to the gender pay gap and examine the practical problems related to the application of existing Japanese gender equality law. Finally, with reference to relevant Canadian legal measures, the chapter will propose new Japanese legislative mechanisms to address sex-based workplace discrimination.
