Abstract
This chapter outlines how media ownership in New Zealand has moved from transnational corporate and financial ownership toward private and independent ownership. It also outlines some of the major changes and challenges in the country's media ecosystem during the past decade. The country's news media market is relatively small compared to other Anglosphere markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, but it does have similar financial and structural challenges to the comparable media markets. The contemporary media system in New Zealand has many of the characteristics of North Atlantic or Liberal media systems, but it also has some parallels with the North European or Democratic Corporatist Model. In contrast to North Atlantic or liberal media systems, New Zealand has recently put a great emphasis on public broadcasting and public interest journalism, following North European democratic traditions.
