Abstract
Canada's journalism landscape is made up of largely commercial media organizations, with a public service broadcaster operating in both official languages and a number of Indigenous languages, a national Indigenous media organization, and a robust diasporic and transnational media sector. The private broadcasting industry makes up the largest proportion of publishers in the Canadian media landscape. Concerns about national identity have shaped a regulatory framework focused on the production, protection, and promotion of Canadian content. Canadian content is protected through two pieces of legislation, the 1991 Broadcasting Act and the Telecommunications Act. Canada has a long history of policy interventions to help, encourage, or protect the creative industries, including journalism, largely driven by efforts at nation-building. As in other liberal democratic countries, there are concerns over the potential for the spread of misinformation and disinformation, as well as more and more clickbait websites crowding the media ecosystem.
