O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar o provimento do cargo de diretor em escolas da rede de ensino do município de Esteio, no Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, no contexto do fortalecimento dos ideários neoliberais. Para a compreensão do avanço neoliberal na educação, necessária ao desenvolvimento deste estudo, são abordadas três tendências indicadas por Laval (2004) – a desinstitucionalização, a desvalorização e a desintegração –, utilizando uma metodologia apoiada na pesquisa bibliográfico-documental. Dessa forma, a partir da literatura existente sobre o tema e da análise das leis que regulamentam a eleição de diretores no município, é possível identificar o momento em que tais tendências ganham força e transformam o provimento ao cargo de diretor em uma escolha realizada por meio de uma empresa com o aval do poder público local. Os resultados evidenciam que dispositivos legais, a exemplo da Lei n.º 8.013/2021 instituída em Esteio, vêm flexibilizando possibilidades de práticas sociais que sustentam o arrefecimento da gestão democrática e o fortalecimento do ideário neoliberal.
