Abstract
The former centre of Middle East banking, Lebanon, with an area of only 10,450 square kilometres (4,000 square miles) lies on the Mediterranean Sea bounded on the north and east by Syria and on the south and southeast by Israel. One of the first Arab countries to gain political independence during the modern period (from France in 1943), Lebanon now has a parliamentary and democratic system of government. Although its resident population is about 3.5 million (no official census has been held since 1932), some 6 million Lebanese emigrants live in other parts of the world, with particularly large communities being found in France, Canada, the United States, Brazil, other parts of the Middle East and in a number of African countries.
