Abstract
Known as apple clearwing moth in North America, Synanthedon myopaeformis is an introduced pest of apples, Malus domestica , in British Columbia and Ontario, Canada, and Washington state in the United States. Infestation by apple clearwing moth can girdle the trees, increase tree susceptibility to pathogens, and result in fruit loss, stunted growth, or tree death. Chemical insecticides, pheromone-based mating disruption, and mass-trapping methods are used to manage S. myopaeformis . This chapter reviews the natural enemies and potential biological control agents of S. myopaeformis identified in Europe (native range) and in Canada (invaded range), including parasitoids, predators, nematodes, and fungal pathogens. In Canada, generalist predators may contribute to apple clearwing moth management, especially in organic orchards, but so far, no parasitoids have been imported from Europe. An endemic parasitoid, Pimpla varians , does not appear to contribute to management of S. myopaeformis .
